This TDLR-approved* workshop will feature three hours of ethics training and five hours of hands-on terminology training. In the ethics component we will cover the TDLR rules and cannons for the ethical conduct of judiciary interpreters. In the terminology component we will sight translate forms from municipal, justice-of-the-peace, county, and state courts. The legal meaning of terms as used in U.S. courts - which may differ from their meaning in other contexts - will be explained.
The workshop is intended mainly for court interpreters licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) who are seeking to fulfill their TDLR continuing education requirement. It will also provide excellent training for interpreters preparing to take the TDLR licensing exam. Other non-licensed interpreters are welcome, provided they have some professional interpreting experience.
This workshop will not be language-specific. The language of instruction will be English, with some vocabulary provided in Spanish.
Participants licensed by TDLR will earn 8 continuing education hours.
* TDLR course nos. 4127 and 4586. Provider: Berkana Language Center, Provider no. 1345.
Participants certified by the American Translators Association (ATA) will earn 8 continuing education points.
Presenter: M. Eta Trabing has been a technical translator since 1956, first in Argentina, then in the US. She worked as a conference and certified court interpreter from 1968 until her retirement in 2002, obtaining certification as a US federal court interpreter in 1980. She has been teaching interpretation and translation for almost three decades. She is an approved provider of continuing education courses for both the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and the American Translators Association.
She has published a number of books on translation and interpretation, bilingual glossaries, and dictionaries, through Berkana Language Center, the company that she runs with her son, Alex. Many of these books are being used by colleges and universities as text books in interpretation classes.
She is an active life member of ATA. She is also a life member, and currently treasurer of the Houston Interpreters and Translators Association (HITA), which she has also served as president and vice-president. She was also president and remains a member of the Carolina Association of Translators and Interpreters (CATI). She has been a guest speaker and trainer at numerous conferences and seminars throughout the U.S and abroad.

AATIA
Since 1985, the Austin Area Translators and Interpreters Assocciation (AATIA) has brought together language specialists to share expertise, provide opportunities to learn more about the tools and techniques of professional translators and interpreters, and promote the recognition of translation and interpretation in the larger community.
Today—with its strong regional, national, and international ties—AATIA is one of the largest and most active associations of professional translators and interpreters in the country.
